The top priority for Texas basketball and head coach Rodney Terry in the 2024 recruiting class this fall is the elite five-star Dallas (TX) Link Academy shooting guard Tre Johnson. The No. 1 shooting guard recruit in the nation in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry Ranking has narrowed his list down to Texas and the Baylor Bears.

Johnson announced on his Instagram page on Oct. 10 that Texas and Baylor are his top two schools.

There is also still the very real possibility that Johnson will consider taking his talents to the G-League.

Texas basketball “has started to pick up momentum” with 5-Star SG Tre Johnson before signing day next month

With the start of the Early Signing Period for college hoops less than a month away, things in this recruitment have started to heat up. In the last couple of months, Johnson has visited Texas and Baylor. His most recent visit was to Waco to see head coach Scott Drew and the Bears on Sep. 23.

And while Baylor held the momentum in this recruitment coming out of Johnson’s late September official visit to Waco, it sounds like Terry and the Longhorns are making a big late push of their own. On3 reported on Oct. 20 that “Texas has started to pick up momentum” in the race to land a commitment from Johnson this fall.

Terry and the Longhorns are making this a really interesting battle on the recruiting trail for Johnson heading into November.

Johnson could commit before or during the Early Signing Period

With the Early Signing Period starting Nov. 8, there are only a few weeks remaining for Johnson to make a decision. That is if he’s planning on announcing his commitment and signing his NLI with the school he chooses before the late signing period next year.

If Johnson does wait until after the Early Signing Period to announce his decision, the G-League becomes a more real threat in this recruitment.
