For the second time this preseason, head coach Rodney Terry and No. 18 ranked (in the preseason AP Poll) Texas basketball competed in a scrimmage. Jeff Goodman of The Messenger reported on Oct. 21 that Texas faced the Colorado Buffaloes and head coach Tad Boyle in a “secret scrimmage” on Oct. 21.

Eric Henry of Horns247 also confirmed the report that the Longhorns faced the Buffs in a secret scrimmage this weekend.

Texas reportedly fell short of Colorado in this closed scrimmage on Oct. 21, by a score of 87-78. The leading scorer for the Longhorns in this scrimmage was sophomore forward Dillon Mitchell, who registered a game-high 22 points.

Senior guard Max Abmas had an off shooting day, putting up a dozen points on 4-of-17 shooting from the field. Abmas also had five assists in the scrimmage.

Junior guard Tyrese Hunter was second on the team in scoring (at least from the reported stats from the scrimmage) with 18 points.

Colorado’s leading scorer in the scrimmage against the Longhorns was junior guard KJ Simpson. The third-year Colorado guard registered 21 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

Terry wanted to be challenged by Colorado’s guard play

Terry told Horns247 that he wanted his team to be challenged by Colorado’s guard play. And that certainly looked to be the case as Abmas and Hunter were outscored by Colorado’s top guard duo of Simpson and senior J’Vonne Hadley.

Texas was also challenged by senior All-PAC-12 forward Tristan Da Silva, who registered 18 points in this scrimmage for the Buffs.

Texas was without big man Kadin Shedrick

Goodman reported on Oct. 21 that Texas was without the former Virginia Cavaliers redshirt junior transfer center Kadin Shedrick in this scrimmage. Shedrick is still recovering from shoulder surgery he had earlier in the offseason. He is reportedly hoping to debut for the Longhorns in the regular season opener on Nov. 6 at home at the Moody Center in Austin against the Incarnate Word Cardinals.

Texas has one more scrimmage before the regular season tips off

Texas has now participated in two scrimmages a few weeks before the regular season opener on Nov. 6 against Incarnate Word. Terry and the Longhorns held the Orange-White Scrimmage at Gregory Gymnasium on Oct. 17. The Orange team edged out the white team by a score of 34-23 in the scrimmage last week.

The last preseason scrimmage for the Longhorns before the start of the regular season is on Oct. 30 at the Moody Center against St. Edward’s, with the tip-off time set for 7 p.m. CT.
