Texas Basketball: 5-Star PF Asa Newell sets late-October commitment
A top priority among big men in the 2024 recruiting class for Texas basketball and head coach Rodney Terry, five-star Athens (GA) Montverde Academy power forward Asa Newell will announce his commitment this week. Newell told On3’s Joe Tipton on Oct. 24 that he will commit on Oct. 25.
Texas is one of the four finalist schools for Newell when he announces on Oct. 25. The other three finalist schools are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Georgia Bulldogs, and Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Georgia is the reported favorite to land the elite hometown big man prospect Newell. He is a native of Athens, GA, and his older brother, redshirt freshman power forward Jaden Newell, plays for Georgia.
Texas made an impression on Newell’s official visit to Austin in early September
Terry and the Longhorns made a big impression on Newell during his official visit to Austin from Sep. 9-11. He liked what he saw from Texas and appreciated the vibe in Austin.
Newell also took official visits to Alabama (Aug. 1-3, 2023), Georgia (early October 2023), and Gonzaga (July 25-26) during the summer.
Newell is one of Texas’ top frontcourt priorities in the 2024 class before the Early Signing Period in mid-November
Less than a month until the first signing period of the 2024 recruiting cycle, Texas has pinpointed Newell as one of its top priorities among big men in this class.
After Texas missed on multiple priority forwards on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class in the last couple of months, including Montverde Academy five-star Liam McNeeley (Indiana commit) and Houston (TX) Pasadena Memorial four-star Robert Miller III (LSU commit), Newell became an even more important target for the Longhorns.
The Longhorns are also targeting four-star Carrollton (TX) Newman-Smith power forward Nic Codie in the 2024 class this fall. Codie has the Auburn Tigers, Miami Hurricanes, Houston Cougars, TCU Horned Frogs, LSU, and Texas as finalists and will announce his commitment on Nov. 2.
