Even after securing a commitment from Wingo on Oct. 25, the “must-win” recruitment for the Longhorns this fall is the elite five-star Waco (TX) Connally cornerback Kobe Black. The No. 1 cornerback recruit in Texas in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry Ranking was the Longhorns’ top priority at the position since the spring last offseason.

Cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph and the Longhorns continue to hold the pole position in the race to land a commitment from Black this fall. Texas A&M, the LSU Tigers, and Oklahoma Sooners have tried to make late pushes in this recruitment. But Black canceled recent scheduled official visits to LSU and Texas A&M.

And Oklahoma’s recent push in this recruitment hasn’t done much to cut into the Texas lead with Black.

Black told On3/Inside Texas on Oct. 25 that he is “nearing a decision” and is down to a “few schools” before publicly announcing his commitment. He will reportedly have an announcement ceremony at Connally High School when he publicly commits.

Texas checks many boxes among the key factors for Black in this recruitment. Joseph also has great relationships with Black and his family.

Joseph will be in attendance to watch Black and the Waco Connally Cadets take on the 7-1 Madisonville (TX) Mustangs at home on Oct. 27.

There is a good chance that Black will become the Longhorns’ fourth five-star commit in the 2024 class heading into signing day in December.
