Texas Football: 3 takeaways from Longhorns’ stifling win vs. BYU
Adonai Mitchell having a career season at Texas
Texas’ best receiver in this game was Mitchell. He caught three passes for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Mitchell’s first touchdown was on a deep connection for 30 yards from Murphy. That was also the first career touchdown pass for Murphy.
Murphy connected with Mitchell for their second touchdown of the game in the second half to seal the win for the Longhorns on a 12-yard completion.
Mitchell continues to emerge as one of the biggest weapons for the Longhorns in the passing game this season. This was his second multi-touchdown game of the season, with the first coming in the big Week 2 win on the road over the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide.
The third-year wideout has also emerged as a significant red zone target for the Longhorns in the passing game. Following the win over BYU, Mitchell has seven red zone catches for over 60 yards and five touchdown catches. He’s tied for the most red zone touchdown catches of any Big 12 wide receiver this season.
Mitchell came into this week already having a career season for the Longhorns. He has now more than doubled his previous career-high in receiving touchdowns. And he’s now close to topping his previous career-high in receiving yards, 426, that he posted as a true freshman in 2021.
