Texas football got another big pickup in the 2024 recruiting class last weekend when it flipped the commitment of the highly touted four-star Marrero (LA) John Ehret cornerback Wardell Mack from the Florida Gators. Mack is Texas’ third blue-chip defensive back commitment in the 2024 class and the 20th in total.

Mack is also the first of what could be many flips head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns pull off in the 2024 class before signing day in mid-December. And Mack isn’t even the only flip target the Longhorns have pursued this year from the Gators 2024 class.

Texas’ grand prize target in the secondary among its flip targets in the 2024 class this fall is the elite five-star McKinney (TX) safety and Florida commit Xavier Filsaime. The No. 1 safety recruit in Texas in the 2024 class in the 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry Ranking is a top priority for safeties coach Blake Gideon and the Longhorns as signing day approaches on Dec. 20.

Texas football making progress with 5-Star UF S commit Xavier Filsaime in the last week

Gideon and the Longhorns have been chipping away at Filsaime’s commitment to Florida in the last couple of months. Texas finally offered Filsaime on Oct. 9, which was a little bit late in the process.

But Texas has made some real progress in their efforts to chip away at Filsaime’s commitment to the Gators as head coach Billy Napier’s 2024 class has started to fall apart in the last few weeks. Just in the last six days, Florida has lost three blue-chip commitments in the 2024 class, including Mack to the Longhorns.

That has given Filsaime something to think about as Texas continues its efforts to get him on campus before signing day next month.

Inside Texas reported on Nov. 17 (paid content) that Texas is “starting to gain some momentum” in this recruitment in the last couple of weeks. Filsaime is reportedly expected to make a visit to Texas with his father in the next few weeks.

Texas is the biggest threat to flip Filsaime from Florida

That is big news for the Longhorns if Gideon and this staff can get Filsaime to campus for a visit before signing day. If and when Filsaime shows up on the 40 this fall, the talk of Texas flipping his commitment from Florida becomes a serious threat to the Gators.

Mack flipping to Texas has certainly helped the Longhorns’ case in their quest to flip Filsaime from Florida. It sounds like Filsaime and Mack communicate pretty regularly. Having that voice in Filsaime’s ear is a factor in this recruitment down the stretch heading into signing day next month.

Filsaime is a top remaining DB priority for Texas in the 2024 class this fall

Filsaime and the elite five-star Waco (TX) Connally cornerback Kobe Black are Texas’ top two remaining priorities at defensive back in the 2024 class this fall. Texas is looking to take two more scholarship defensive backs in the 2024 class heading into signing day. It can’t get any better for the Longhorns in the secondary for this cycle than getting Black and Filsaime in the boat.
