Texas Football: 4-Star Texas A&M LB commit sets official visit date to UT
A big week for Texas football on the recruiting trail in the 2024 class with flip targets continues. Justin Wells of Inside Texas reported on Nov. 18 that Texas will host the touted four-star Jasper (TX) linebacker and Texas A&M Aggies commit Tyanthony Smith for an official visit to Austin on Nov. 24 at DKR against the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Wells/Inside Texas reported on Nov. 17 (paid content) that Smith was “expected” to take an official visit to Austin for the Black Friday game on Nov. 24 at DKR against Texas Tech. Now that Jasper was knocked out of the Texas high school state playoffs in the second round by Waco (TX) Connally on Nov. 17, Smith had the availability to take the official visit to Austin next week.
4-Star Texas A&M LB commit Tyanthony Smith sets Nov. 24 Texas football official visit date
Texas has made Smith a top priority among in-state flip targets at the linebacker position in the 2024 class. Co-DC/LB coach Jeff Choate and the Longhorns have remained in contact with Smith since he committed to Texas A&M during the summer over the Longhorns and USC Trojans.
Smith was originally scheduled to take a midweek official visit to Texas during the summer. But it was eventually canceled, along with all the other midweek official visits Texas had scheduled in June.
Smith was also slated to take an official visit to Texas for the Week 5 matchup at DKR against the No. 24 Kansas Jayhawks. But he didn’t make it to that visit for the Texas-Kansas game on Sep. 30 as he remained firm on his commitment to Texas A&M at the time.
Texas effectively chipping away at Smith’s commitment to Texas A&M after the firing of Jimbo Fisher
Texas is pushing to flip Smith’s commitment from the Aggies after Texas A&M fired head coach Jimbo Fisher last week following their win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in College Station.
Smith is one of Texas’ top linebacker priorities in the 2024 class, along with five-star Conroe (TX) Oak Ridge LB/Georgia Bulldogs commit Justin Williams. Texas has pushed to get Smith and/or Williams to campus for a visit this fall.
The Longhorns don’t currently have a linebacker committed to the 2024 class. Smith and Williams are the two linebacker prospects the Longhorns would take commitments from in the 2024 class.
