If Texas wins the Big 12 title, it deserves to be in the College Football Playoff no matter what

If Texas beats whichever Oklahoma school it winds up playing in the Big 12 Championship Game in Arlington next weekend, Sark’s squad deserves to get one of the four spots in the College Football Playoff.

But it is not a certainty that the Longhorns get into the College Football Playoff even if they do win the Big 12 Championship Game and head into the postseason with a 12-1 (8-1 Big 12) record.

In the fourth release of the College Football Playoff rankings earlier this week, Texas was the second-highest-rated one-loss team behind the No. 6 Oregon Ducks. And with Oregon locking up a spot in the PAC-12 Championship Game and what is now head coach Dan Lanning’s only win over a foe that is currently ranked this season by beating No. 16 Oregon State on Black Friday, the Ducks could get in the Playoff ahead of Texas.

There is still a lot of football left to be played, but it seems pretty ludicrous that there are scenarios where Texas wins out and doesn’t get into the Playoff. Texas has probably the best argument regarding strength of schedule and ranked wins to get in the Playoff of all the potential one-loss contenders for the CFP.

Texas not only has the best win in college football this season, with a double-digit victory over the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa in Week 2, but also the toughest strength of schedule among the Playoff contenders (per ESPN).

Even comparing resumes between Oregon and Texas, the Longhorns have the tougher strength of schedule and the much bigger win between these two team’s only common opponent. Oregon barely survived Texas Tech with a one-score win in Lubbock earlier this season. Texas beat Texas Tech by 43 points more than the Ducks did.
