Texas Football: Social media reacts to Longhorns making the CFP
The unenviable job of the College Football Playoff selection committee decided the fate of the Texas football program for the postseason on Dec. 3. Texas had a shot at getting selected for the College Football Playoff for the first time ever.
It was known that the Michigan Wolverines and Washington Huskies would get in the four-team Playoff field after going undefeated and winning Power Five conferences this season. That left the following four teams up for debate.
- Texas (12-1), Big 12 Champion
- Alabama (12-1), SEC Champion
- Florida State (13-0), ACC Champion
- Georgia (12-1), SEC runner-up
The selection committee gave the Longhorns the edge over the rest of this group of top schools for the Playoff as the three seed. Texas will face the two-seed Washington in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Jan. 1, 2024.
The four-team Playoff field pits No. 1 Michigan against No. 4 Alabama and No. 2 Washington against No. 3 Texas.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns made a statement to the College Football Playoff selection committee after beating the No. 18 Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Big 12 Championship Game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX, on Dec. 2. Texas defeated Oklahoma State by a convincing final score of 49-21.
Texas won its first Big 12 Championship and reached double-digit wins heading into the postseason since 2009. The Longhorns made the BCS National Championship Game in 2009.
