Hunter Andrews, ATH (Utah commit)

Among the most recent offers the Texas coaching staff sent out late in this cycle was to three-star Magnolia (TX) athlete and Utah Utes commit Hunter Andrews. Texas offered Andrews as a tight end/linebacker on Dec. 6.

And it sounds like an official visit to Austin could be in the works for Andrews in the next week. If special teams coordinator/tight ends coach Jeff Banks and the Longhorns keep their foot on the gas with Andrews in the next few days, I would expect him to show up on campus for an official visit by next weekend.

While Andrews plays running back for Magnolia High School, Texas is evaluating him at linebacker or tight end. The 6-foot-2 and 215-pound athlete from Texas has an intriguing combination of size, strength, speed, and high football IQ, which gives him the versatility to fit at either position on either side of the ball at the collegiate level.

The need is there for Banks and the Longhorns to add more depth at tight end this offseason with All-Big 12 junior tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders expected to declare early for the NFL Draft next spring.

Texas is expected to take another tight end in the 2024 class, along with three-star Houston (TX) Langham Creek product Jordan Washington, via the portal or high school recruiting. Since Washington is viewed as more of a developmental receiving tight end. Meanwhile, the Longhorns need more of an immediate impact tight end who can block and run routes in the receiving game.

If Andrews were to hypothetically flip his commitment from Utah to Texas before signing day in a couple of weeks, he could also play linebacker for the Longhorns. Texas hasn’t taken any linebacker commits in the 2024 class after missing on four-star Texas A&M pledge Tyanthony Smith and five-star Georgia pledge Justin Williams this fall.

Texas likes its situation at linebacker after signing a strong group of blue-chips recruits at the position in the 2023 class. But Andrews could still fill a spot at linebacker for 2024, with Texas expected to lose senior Jaylan Ford to the NFL Draft next offseason.
