3 big overreactions after Texas's SEC title game loss v. UGA
The No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs and head coach Kirby Smart toppled No. 2 Texas football and head coach Steve Sarkisian for the second time in two meetings between these two teams in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday evening.
Texas football draws Clemson in the CFP first round after falling short in the SEC Championship Game vs. No. 5 Georgia
Texas (11-2, 7-1 SEC) couldn't capitalize on the opportunities it had in the first half, when it outgained Georgia (11-2, 6-2 SEC) by a margin of over 200 total yards on offense, for anything more than six points. The Longhorns not getting a more comfortable lead in the first half (which was 6-3 heading into the locker room at halftime) came back to bite them in overtime.
Georgia got a big momentum boost in the second half when backup quarterback Gunner Stockton led a long touchdown drive for the Dawgs first TD of the game early in the third quarter. Stockton took over for starting quarterback Carson Beck, who suffered an elbow injury on the final play before halftime.
The 22-19 overtime defeat to Georgia didn't hurt the Longhorns too bad with its standing with the College Football Playoff selection committee on Dec. 8. The five-seed Texas hosts the 12-seed and ACC Champion Clemson Tigers (10-3, 7-1 ACC) for a first-round matchup in the College Football Playoff at DKR on Dec. 21.
Here are three big overreactions following Texas's crushing 22-19 overtime loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 7.
Texas's ground game will make-or-break their run in the College Football Playoff
Whenever Georgia had over six defenders in the box, Texas found it nearly impossible to run the ball against the Dawgs. Sophomore running back Quintrevion Wisner rushed for just 51 yards on 19 carries (2.7 yards per carry) with no rushing touchdowns against Georgia yesterday.
Including sack yardage, the Longhorns rushed for just 31 yards and barely over one yard per carry against Georgia's stifling defensive front.
Wisner was never able to consistently make significant gains and set the tone for Texas's ground game. He was hit at the line of scrimmage on over 40 percent of his rushing plays yesterday, and picked up just two first downs (fewest first downs for Wisner while having double-digit rushing attempts in a single game this season).
Texas will need Wisner and the Texas offensive line to step it up to help balance out the offensive gameplan for Sarkisian and the Longhorns in the College Football Playoff against Clemson in the first round.
