3 new portal entrants Texas is expected to target this month
Julian Humphrey, CB
Texas's secondary has been excellent this season. Led by senior cornerback Jahdae Barron, and upperclassmen safeties Michael Taaffe and Andrew Mukuba, the Longhorns' defensive backfield has been the best and most consistent pass defense in the SEC in 2024.
Terry Joseph, Blake Gideon, and the Longhorns are losing some key pieces from this secondary due to expected NFL Draft entrants next spring and exhausted eligibility players. Barron and Mukuba will exhaust their eligibility next offseason.
Taaffe and junior nickel Jaylon Guilbeau have decisions to make for the upcoming NFL Draft next spring.
I'd expect the Longhorns to look at a portal defensive back or two to help the secondary fill gaps where it loses top players next offseason to the NFL Draft.
An early option for the Longhorns to explore at the corner position in the portal during the winter window is former Georgia Bulldogs redshirt sophomore Julian Humphrey.
Humphrey, a Houston-area native, is from Texas and has the proven experience of starting multiple years in an SEC secondary at Georgia. The 6-foot and 190-pound corner started double-digit games for Georgia this season before announcing his intentions to enter the portal last week.
The fact that Humphrey played pretty well against the Longhorns should definitely help Texas be more interested in his services via the portal during the winter window.
It was reported a few days ago that Texas is "expected" to be one of the schools in contention for Humphrey in the portal over the coming weeks. The Miami Hurricanes, Alabama, Oregon, and Texas A&M were also mentioned among the teams expected to show interest in Humphrey's portal recruitment during the upcoming transfer cycle in December.
