Ohio State's starting safeties are the glue of the Buckeyes secondary, featuring First-Team All-American sophomore Caleb Downs and experienced senior Lathan Ransom.

There is a long history that goes back a half-decade between Ransom and the Longhorns. He also has connections with other coaches on Texas's staff, namely cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph from his time with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish a few years ago.

Despite Ransom's early commitment to the Buckeyes in the summer of 2018, the Longhorns were one of the schools that really pushed for his recruitment to flip his pledge from Ohio State during summer official visits in 2019. Texas received an official visit from Ransom during the 2019 offseason.

Ransom and his parents had a great experience during the Texas official visit in June 2019.

"Everything was top-notch. They checked every box. Location, coaching staff, top-notch football, top-notch facilities, what it’s going to be in 2021 when it’s all done – when it comes to boxes, for me as a parent, UT checked every single box. It was a pretty cool visit"

Texas was one of the final five schools that made the cut for Ransom in the summer before he signed with Ohio State's 2020 class, along with the Oklahoma Sooners, LSU Tigers, Notre Dame, and the Buckeyes.

Ransom was teammates with former star Texas running back Bijan Robinson at Salpointe Catholic High School in Arizona. Both Bijan and Ransom decided between the Longhorns and Buckeyes for their commitment announcements during the 2019 offseason.
