Texas offered the four-star running back from Longview (TX) and Longview High School, Taylor Tatum, late in his junior season in December 2022. Tatum seriously considered Texas among the top schools in the key stretch of his recruitment early in the 2023 offseason and before his senior season.

He visited Texas unofficially a few times between the start of the 2022 offseason and early in the 2023 offseason. Tatum ranked as the No. 1 running back prospect in the nation in the 2022 class in the 247Sports Composite and On3 Industry Ranking.

But the Longhorns and RB coach Tashard Choice didn't invest as much in Tatum's recruitment later in the summer of last offseason. He took official visits to see the Michigan Wolverines, USC Trojans, and Oklahoma before committing to the Sooners in July 2023.

Choice and the Longhorns prioritized the recruitment of its two eventual RB commits, high-four-star IMG Academy running back Jerrick Gibson, and four-star Phoenix (AZ) Mountain Pointe Christian Clark in the 2024 class.

Tatum has emerged as an immediate impact player at running back for the Oklahoma offense this fall, already having rushed for over 100 yards and three total touchdowns early as a true freshman. The three-sport athlete will play football and baseball for the Sooners this year.
