3 takeaways from Texas's dismantling of Chicago State
For the second straight game, Texas basketball and head coach Rodney Terry put up at least 90 points in a resounding victory over the Chicago State Cougars. Texas got off to a really fast start on both ends of the floor (especially offensively) against Chicago State, putting up 50 points on the Cougars in the first half.
Tre Johnson's 19 points leads Texas basketball to score 105 points in a nearly 50-point victory over Chicago State
Texas's offense was on point in this game, putting up over 100 points in this game against Chicago State.
Compare that to just the 18 points that the Longhorns allowed defensively in the first half, and the gap created was pretty much insurmountable for Chicago State after the game's first 20 minutes.
Texas has shown great ball movement, shooting efficiency, and rebounding against a couple of inferior opponents in the past couple of games in wins over Chicago State and the Houston Christian Huskies. For the third straight game, the Longhorns had 15+ assists and single-digit turnovers.
The Longhorns also handily won the battle on the glass by double digits for the second game in a row. Texas outrebounded Chicago State by a margin of over 15 boards tonight at the Moody Center. The two-way effort for the Longhorns tonight against Chicago State led them to claim the 105-58 win on their home court in Austin.
Here are three takeaways from the Longhorns resounding win over Chicago State on Nov. 12.
Texas's offense stays red-hot shooting from the field and from deep
Texas absolutely came out firing in the first half, shooting 18-of-34 (53%) from the field and 4-of-10 (40%) from beyond the arc. While we would expect this for Texas against a Quad 4 opponent like Chicago State, the offense still did what needed to be done to convert on most of its offensive possessions. Texas got points out of over 55 percent of its offensive possessions in this game.
What's really good to see from the Longhorns is the three-point shooting getting in such a good rhythm in the past two games. Texas is showing off its range and versatility in the guard/wing lineups, while shooting well over 45 percent from beyond the arc in the two wins over Houston Christian and Chicago State.
The shooting and ball movement from the Longhorns helped Terry's squad get off to a much better start against Chicago State than they did in the win over Houston Christian last Friday. Instead of taking just a single-digit lead into the locker room at halftime against the Huskies last week, Texas came out gunning and never looked back against the Cougars tonight.
