3 takeaways from Texas's dismantling of Chicago State
Frontcourt reserves give Texas quality minutes
Texas getting up so big early in this game allowed Terry and staff to get some of the players deeper down the bench in the frontcourt valuable minutes in the second half against the Cougars tonight in the dominant win. Senior big man Ze'Rik Onyema and senior forward Jayson Kent both had solid nights regarding their box score stats and on-court impact for the Texas frontcourt.
Onyema scored more points in a game than he has at Texas, registering 18 points on an uber-efficient 7-of-8 shooting from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. The impact Onyema had on this game also stemmed to the glass on both ends of the floor and with his disruptiveness on defense.
In this game, Onyema was the only Longhorns player to register a block and multiple steals. His three offensive and three defensive rebounds also helped Texas win the battle on the glass by a margin of 16 boards.
Kent, meanwhile, gave the Longhorns' ball movement a boost from inside the arc and helped on the glass on the defensive end. He registered seven points, four defensive rebounds, and three assits in 19 minutes off the bench against Chicago State.
Beyond the impacts we saw Onyema and Kent have on this game for the Longhorns, the frontcourt also got solid minutes in garbage time from freshman center Jaime Vinson and redshirt freshman forward Devon Pryor.
Vinson showed some good rim protection, coming up with a nice block late in the second half. He also registered a couple of buckets to get Texas into triple digits scoring in this game.
Beyond what Texas is getting from senior big man Kadin Shedrick and senior forward Arthur Kaluma, getting solid frontcourt minutes from the bench bigs will be huge for the Longhorns later this season. The schedule gets tougher, including big games next week in Brooklyn in the Legends Classic, like the Syracuse Orange from the ACC.
