Texas Women's Basketball hosted the Southern Jaguars for their annual Teddy Bear Toss at the Moody Center tonight. The Longhorns controlled the tempo from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer. Tonight's result went as expected, with the Longhorns beating the Jaguars 97-39.
Senior forward Taylor Jones was the leading scorer tonight with 19 points and 11 rebounds. While it wasn't tough competition tonight for the Longhorns, there are some things they need to work on moving forward.
One of those things is the number of missed three-pointers they shot in the first half. The Longhorns had a 12.5 three-point shooting percentage at halftime. That is something Vic Schaefer should be upset about. Teams will take advantage of all those missed three-pointers when the Longhorns get to conference games. They do have time to work on that before their conference schedule begins. Here are the three takeaways from tonight's win over the Jaguars.
Takeaways from Texas Women's Basketball's 50+ point win over Southern: 3. Great start in first quarter
The Longhorns got out to a great start against the Jaguars tonight. Texas began the game with a 10-2 run before Southern started to get back into the game. Texas had that intensity and aggressiveness they needed when they got to conference play. While Southern's skill level is not at par with teams in the SEC, It was good to see the Longhorns treat this like a conference game tonight. We are right around the corner when Texas will start taking on tougher competition like South Carolina.
2. Too many missed three pointers
Even though the Longhorns beat the Jaguars tonight, their three-point shooting was terrible. At halftime, the Longhorns had a three-point percentage of 12.5. That won't fly during SEC Conference games because the Longhorns' opponents will take advantage of all the missed three-pointers.
Just because the Longhorns are wide open on the three-point line doesn't mean they don't have to shoot the ball. I hope Schaefer brings it up during film because that can't fly during conference games.
Texas Women's Basketball: 1. Shae Holle sets milestone
Senior guard Shae Holle was honored before the game tonight for playing the most games in program history. Holle has been a prominent leader for the Longhorns over the course of her career in Austin.
Losing her next season will be tough for Schaefer because you can't replace the leadership that Rori Harmon brings to the team. I know her leadership will be valuable to the Longhorns when they start taking on conference teams shortly.
