3 takeaways from Texas's loss to Notre Dame
By Brian Sweet
Before we even get into the postgame article, did anyone expect Texas women's basketball to pull off an undefeated season like South Carolina? When looking through the basketball schedule before the season even began.
There were some games on the Texas schedule that I knew Texas would lose, and tonight was one of them. The Longhorns went to overtime and lost 80-70 to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. It was a heck of an effort by the Longhorns tonight.
The Longhorns went toe-to-toe with two of the best basketball players in the nation tonight, Olivia Miles and Hannah Hidalgo. There is no shame in losing to two of the hottest shooters in the country right now. I see tonight's loss as more of a lesson for the Longhorns on how to contain the nation's top players. I don't think any Longhorns fan should be upset about how tonight's game went. Here are the three takeaways from the loss against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Takeaways from Texas women's basketball loss vs. Notre Dame: 3. Did their best to slow down two great players
Hildalgo and Miles were two of the best players in the nation going into tonight's game against the Longhorns. Hidalgo finished with 30 points, while Miles finished with 18 points. If the Longhorns want to beat some of the best players in the nation this year, they can't allow them to have career games like Hildalgo did tonight.
After watching the game, I see that the Longhorns brought the defense tonight; it was not enough to slow both players down. Chalk it up as a lesson learned.
2. Booker's rough night
Give credit to the Fighting Irish for slowing Sophomore forward Madison Booker down from being a difference-maker on the court tonight. She was 10-28 combined from the field tonight against the Fighting Irish. The Longhorns can't win if Booker has that kind of night moving forward. It felt like she made some ill-advised shots on the court. Booker is still a young player and has a lot to learn. I felt like tonight was a valuable lesson in her development as a forward.
1. It's hard to go undefeated
The Longhorns learned that it's tough to go undefeated as a team during the regular season. The Longhorns don't have the depth a team like South Carolina has to pull that off. I know some earlier games this season made it feel like they could pull it off.
However, Notre Dame is the toughest team they play early on in the season. Vic Schaefer knows what needs to be worked on when the Longhorns take the court during conference play. This was a good learning experience for the entire team.
