Texas Women's Basketball opened their SEC Conference schedule against the Oklahoma Sooners in Norman, Oklahoma, tonight. It was a forty-minute contested game between two teams that wanted to start 2025 with a win.

The dogfight ended in the game's final five minutes when the Longhorns pulled away with an 80-73 victory over the Sooners. Freshman guard Jordan Lee led the Longhorns with 17 points tonight. There are some things the ladies need to work on before their next game.

The Longhorns played many small basketball teams during their non-conference schedule; I knew they wouldn't be physically prepared for tonight's game against the Sooners. It felt like the Longhorns thought they had the game in the bag over the opening tip-off.

However, the Sooners made them fight for every point they scored tonight. The Sooners showed Vic Schaefer they have some improvements to fix before contending for the SEC Women's Basketball Championship. Here are the three takeaways from tonight's narrow win over the Sooners.

Takeaways from Texas women's basketball's win over OU: 3. Making free throws

The Longhorns were almost perfect from the free-throw line tonight. The Longhorns had 18 out of 22 free throws and helped the Longhorns knock off the Sooners tonight. Free throws could be the difference between a loss and a win.

Tonight, it worked to the Longhorns's advantage. Seeing the Longhorns punish the Sooners for committing so many fouls was great. I'm sure this is one thing Schaefer doesn't need to worry about when looking back at the footage tomorrow.

2. Getting out-rebounded

This is one of the things that Schaefer will bring up during the film session tomorrow. The Longhorns had a tough time controlling the glass and rebounding the ball tonight. They were out-rebounded by the Sooners 37-24, which is probably why the game was so close tonight.

The Longhorns have to do a better job of rebounding the ball against SEC teams if they want to survive in this conference. I'm sure they will work on that with the forwards at practice before their next game.

1. Less fouling

The last takeaway for the Longhorns is to cut down on all the fouls. The Longhorns must beat teams by not putting them on the free throw line in this conference. The Sooners could have won tonight's game if they shot better at the free-throw line.

There are some good free-throw shooters in this conference, and those players making their shots could be the difference between a win or a loss. Overall, the Longhorns did well tonight against the Sooners. Schaefer will prepare them for the Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday at the Moody Center.
