3 takeaways from Texas's opening-night loss vs. Ohio State
Tre Johnson's big scoring debut
Hands down, the most impressive player on the court for the Longhorns tonight was Johnson. The hyped-up five-star freshman shooting guard became the first Longhorn to score over 20 points in his collegiate debut at Texas since Kevin Durant in 2006.
Johnson's 29 points tonight were also the most in a true freshman's debut against a major conference opponent since Duke's RJ Barrett scored over 30 against the Kentucky Wildcats in the Blue Devils 2018-19 regular season opener.
Johnson's scoring efforts were one of the few factors keeping the Longhorns alive offensively in the first half of this game. He scored nearly half of Texas's 31 points in the first half, which kept the Longhorns within single digits heading into the locker room at halftime.
Johnson's contributions to this game for the Longhorns were noticeable on both ends of the floor. He not only shot the ball and created his own offense effectively, but he also distributed the basketball well as an all-around playmaker for Texas. Johnson added four assists and just one turnover along with his game-high 29 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the field, 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.
Defensively, Johnson was engaged and impactful. He was the only Texas player to register multiple steals and a block against Ohio State. Both of Johnson's steals also resulted in points for the Longhorns on the other end of the floor.
This was a tremendous all-around performance for Johnson in his debut. Despite the loss to Ohio State, it's clear that the Longhorns have a go-to player on both ends of the floor who Terry can piece the rest of this talented guard and wing lineup around entering the rest of the non-conference slate.
