Tre Johnson's SEC debut falls flat
Texas A&M's experienced perimeter defenders were very effective in limiting the offensive production of freshman Texas guard Tre Johnson. The star freshman guard and likely future NBA lottery draft pick was held to just 11 points on 2-of-13 shooting from the field and 0-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Johnson had returned to the lineup after missing two games due to a hip injury in Texas's win in the non-con finale over the Northwestern State Demons on Dec. 29, with a team-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.
The Aggies ended the party of Johnson's return to the starting lineup for the Longhorns in the SEC opener.
Johnson's streak of 11 games of made three-pointers was snapped after he missed all five of his attempts from deep against the Aggies.
For the first time this season, Johnson made three or fewer field goals in a game. Over half of Johnson's points in this game came from the free-throw line, where he shot a perfect 7-of-7.
With the Aggies scoring 80 points against the Longhorns for the first time in over a month, Texas needed more offensive production from Johnson to stay competitive in this game. Johnson going cold from the field in the second half essentially put the nail in the coffin for the Longhorns in the SEC opener tonight.
