3 takeaways from Texas's win over Lamar
By Brian Sweet
Texas Women's Basketball took on the Lamar Cardinals at the Moody Center tonight. The Longhorns would be without Sophomore forward Madison Booker, who has a day-to-day hamstring injury. Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball Coach Vic Schaefer said the injury is not severe.
Not having Booker in the lineup didn't phase the Longhorns as they beat the Cardinals 95-58. That isn't the only good thing that happened to the Women's Basketball program today.
The Longhorns announced that Aaliyah Crump committed to the Longhorns earlier today. That is another massive signing for Schaefer and the 2025 recruiting class that he's putting together. The 6'1 combo guard will bring some size to the guards next season. The Longhorns will lose Senior guard Rori Harmon after this season. However, Crump's ability to score baskets will replace Harmon's production in the lineup. Here are the three takeaways from yesterday's win against the Cardinals.
Takeaways from Texas women's basketball's win over Lamar: 3. Had some injury scares during the game
There were a few injury scares tonight against Lamar. Harmon didn't see one of the Cardinals setting a screen, and she ran right into her. After a few minutes on the bench, she returned to the basketball game. She left the game in the second half, favoring her right knee, leaving the court.
Harmon returned in the fourth quarter and put the fans at ease. However, Senior forward Aaliyah Moore would not return until the second half after a non-contact injury while grabbing a rebound.
2. Freshman got ample playing time
The three highly recruited freshmen got plenty of playing time tonight against the Cardinals. Freshman guard Jordan Lee finished with 12 points. Freshman forward Justice Carlton finished with 15 points. Lastly, Freshman guard Bryanna Preston finished with nine points.
The freshman needed to get playing time against the Cardinals tonight. Who knows if the Longhorns will get any more injuries this season? The freshman proved to Schaefer that he could put them in the game and that the offense would continue.
1. Laila Phelia got her first minutes as a Longhorn
Senior guard Laila Phelia got her first minutes of the season tonight against the Cardinals. She was the guard that Schaefer recruited from Michigan in the transfer portal. Phelia will be the backup point guard if Harmon gets injured and misses any time this season.
Even though she finished with eight points tonight, It was good seeing her get some reps and develop chemistry with her teammates. The Longhorn's next game will take them on the road to take on DePaul University on Sunday night.
