3 takeaways from Texas's win over West Virginia
By Brian Sweet
Texas Women's Basketball took on the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Gulf Coast Showcase tonight. The Longhorns were ready to take on a tough Mountaineers squad. After beating the Bulldogs last night, the Longhorns had energy in the first quarter.
This was the perfect opponent to take on before the huge game against Notre Dame this week. The Longhorns would go onto win 78-73 over the Mountaineers and bring home the Gulf Coast Showcase Championship.
Senior forward Aaliyah Moore was dominant on the boards and was the primary scorer tonight with () points. This was a good win because the Mountaineers gave the Longhorns a run for their money. I'm more surprised that Rori Harmon and Madison Booker had terrible shooting nights.
After playing two games back-to-back, the energy was depleted. Let's examine the three takeaways from the Longhorn's win over the Mountaineers tonight.
Takeaways from Texas women's basketball's win over West Virginia: 3. Aaliyah Moore
Moore showed up when the Longhorns needed her the most tonight. She would finish the game with 20 points and five rebounds. Near the end of the third quarter, it started getting close for comfort.
However, Moore's presence at the rim was one of the significant factors in why the Longhorns beat the Mountaineers. It was great to see her get ready for the Fighting Irish because the Longhorns will need her ability to grab rebounds and score on Thursday night.
2. Harmon and Booker's bad shooting night
Even though the Longhorns won, Booker and Harmon combined 9-28 from the field. That can't happen against an elite basketball team like Notre Dame and South Carolina. After playing three games in three days, I'm sure their energy was depleted.
Luckily, the Longhorns have some time off before the massive matchup against the Fighting Irish. We will see a better game from both when the Longhorns play on Thursday night.
1. Fourth quarter
The Longhorns' defense in the fourth quarter is why they were able to come away with the win over the Mountaineers tonight. I'm not surprised how good the defense was when Vic Schaefer's nickname is the Secretary of Defense.
That is when the Longhorns needed to shut down the Mountaineers in the final minute and come away with the win. I'm very proud of how the ladies played at the Gulf Coast Showcase. There's no doubt they deserve to be the tournament Champions.
