3 takeaways from Texas Women's Basketball win over SEMO
By Brian Sweet
Texas Women's Basketball decided to start the season on the right foot this afternoon. It was good to see Senior guard Rori Harmon back on the court after tearing her ACL during practice last December, right before the BIG 12 Conference games started.
The Longhorns and Sophomore forward Madison Booker look ready to take on the season. The Longhorns beat the Southeastern Missouri Redhawks in dominating fashion 119-47. It was a good statement win to begin the long season, which includes their inaugural SEC schedule.
Just because the Longhorns won by a landslide today doesn't mean it's time to pull out the confetti streamers and celebration fireworks.
The Longhorns were expected to blow them out of the water due to how well Texas coach Vic Schaefer built his roster for this season. It's got a lot of experience and talent up and down the roster. Here are three takeaways from the win against the Redhawks this afternoon.
Takeaways from Texas women's basketball's win over SEMO: 3. Great game for Harmon
Even though Harmon only scored 10 points this afternoon, that's pretty good, considering it's her second game back from her ACL recovery. I'm sure Schaefer limited her minutes so she didn't screw up her knee again. Harmon has one of the best point guard IQs I've seen in a long time in Women's College Basketball.
I have nothing against Paige Bueckers from UCONN, but Harmon can decipher the opponent's defense and get the ball to the basket. It was great to see Harmon back on the court today.
2. The Chef cooked on the court
Madison "The Chef" Booker was worth the price of admission this afternoon. Booker is going to be a force to be reckoned with this season. She finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds against the Redhawks. She made 60 percent of her field goals and only missed one free throw.
I can't wait to see her take on more formidable teams this year. The Notre Dame game is one I have circled on my calendar. If Booker continues to dominate on the court this season, the postseason awards and honors she wins will be through the roof.
1. Kyla Oldacre is going to be a fan-favorite
The one player that caught my eye on the court the most this afternoon was Junior forward Kyla Oldacre. She transferred to Texas from the University of Miami, and her presence in the paint was huge. She was the leading scorer for the Longhorns this afternoon with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
She will have a significant role in the Longhorns' rotation this season. While I don't want to jump to conclusions, she could impact the Longhorns' matchup with the South Carolina Gamecocks later this season. I can't wait to see her play in their next game against the Lamar Cardinals on Wednesday Night at the Moody Center.
