The first SEC-mandated injury report for this weekend's game on Oct. 12 is slated to be released for No. 1 Texas football and the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Rivalry game on Wednesday evening. We will get a good idea of how banged up each team is entering Red River at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas this weekend.

Texas football's first injury report for the OU game expected on Wednesday

It's a rare sight, but Texas and Oklahoma each had a bye week the week prior to the Red River Rivalry game.

Texas and Oklahoma had the bye week last week to rest up and get healthy at key position groups on each side of the ball. Both the Longhorns and Sooners were banged up at a few key spots entering the bye week roughly 10 days ago.

There will be multiple updates to the SEC-mandated injury report over the next 48 hours, so the first release of the Texas-OU injury report on Oct. 9 won't necessarily be the final statuses for the players listed.

We also have a good idea of which Longhorns players are dealing with lingering injury issues entering Red River this weekend against OU. Here are four key injury updates for Texas players entering Red River week against the Sooners on Oct. 12.

Jerrick Gibson, RB

Regarding the health of the running back room, the bye week came at a great time for the Longhorns.

Texas's running back room has been the most banged up position group on either side of the ball for the Longhorns this fall. Pretty much every single Texas RB has appeared on the injury report at least once this season in the first five games.

All Texas running backs who were on the injury report last week, including sophomore Tre Wisner and junior Jaydon Blue, should be good to go for the Longhorns this weekend against the Sooners in Red River.

"I thought they had a good week and Jaydon practiced really well. Never mind the ball. I thought, you know [Blue] is coming off an ankle injury and sometimes you're limited in practice leading up to a game, but he looks really healthy. He's practicing fast. Feel very comfortable with him. Those guys are going to play in the game and I feel comfortable with either one of them in the game."

The list of Texas running backs who have dealt with various injury issues this fall also includes true freshman Jerrick Gibson. Since the season opener against Colorado State in Week 1, Gibson has dealt with a lingering lower-body injury that has limited him at times in the past few games.

Gibson was limited to just a handful of carries in the second half of Texas's win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Week 5, by a score of 35-13. He took a season-low four carries for 16 yards, all coming in the second half against Mississippi State.

It sounds like Gibson should also be all rested up and good to go for the Longhorns' running back room against Oklahoma this weekend, same with Blue and Wisner.
