4 overreactions after Texas's sloppy win over Vanderbilt

No. 5 Texas staved off the upset bid from a pesky No. 25 Vanderbilt team and Diego Pavia, despite turning the ball over twice and penalizing itself consistently in the second half of this road game.

Quinn Ewers played his best game of the season after the injury vs. Vanderbilt

After another early-first-quarter turnover on the tipped-ball interception, Ewers responded in a big way to lead Texas's offense to multiple passing touchdowns on scoring drives through the first half.

Since returning from the abdominal strain injury a few weeks ago, this was easily Ewers' most consistent and best performance against Vanderbilt this weekend. Ewers looked much more confident stepping up in the pocket and delivering the football where it needed to to go accurately to his target receivers yesterday.

Ewers was able to take advantage of the mismatch Texas had regarding size, speed, and overall athleticism at running back, tight end, and wide receiver against Vandy's defense. That athleticism advantage helped Ewers complete 73 percent of his pass attempts while posting zero turnover-worthy plays (per PFF).

There was a lot of chatter yesterday on social media that Ewers had another off day for the Longhorns. I think some of those negative reactions are a bit overblown since Ewers made some huge plays and got in a good rhythm for most of this game.

Ewers' best throw of the game against Vanderbilt's secondary came in the fourth quarter when he completed an intermediate throw to senior wide receiver Silas Bolden that resulted in a first down on third-and-long for a 20+-yard conversion at a key point of the game to keep the chains moving.

That said, Ewers needs to be better late in the second halves of SEC games and to set the tone for the offense in the first quarter. Ewers only completed 2-of-7 pass attempts for 36 pass yards, no scores, and a pick in the fourth quarter against Vandy.
