4-star Peyton Smith seems as eager as anyone to be a Longhorn but Texas must make the next move

Four-star wide receiver Peyton Smith has given every sign of wanting to play for the Texas Longhorns in his future, but there is one critical piece of the equation missing.

While Smith, a Texas native to begin with, has been reposting content about the Horns and singing the program's praises after attending the team's summer camp this year, head coach Steve Sarkisian has held back on actually extending an offer to the wideout.

According to both Rivals and 247Sports, Texas has yet to offer Smith, despite 18 Division I teams doing so, including Power Conference in-state programs like the Texas Tech Red Raiders, TCU Horned Frogs, and Houston Cougars.

However, despite the fact that Smith has not received an actual offer from the Longhorns, recruiting insider Sam Spiegelman is confident that as soon as he does get that offer in his inbox, the four-star wideout will commit to Texas.

Spiegelman already submitted a crystal ball prediction that Smith would commit to the Longhorns somewhere down the line, with a respectable 65-percent confidence behind it.

Now, at the end of the day, Texas could never send Smith an offer, even though he is the No. 12 wide receiver in the class of 2028 and a top-100 overall prospect in the cycle. However, with his rankings, it is highly unlikely that Sarkisian and his staff would simply withhold an offer.

Yet, there are a slew of wideouts ranked ahead of Smith for the recruiting class, including fellow Texas natives Jaylen Addai (No. 3 WR, five-star) and Damarion Mays (No. 10 WR, four-star).

Earlier this summer, OnSI included Smith as one of the names expected to attend the Horns' summer camps, where the coaching staff could get a true, in-person sense of a player's on-field abilities beyond just watching their highlight reels.

"Some big names will be on campus for camps," OnSI's JD Andress wrote. "A few names that stand out in the mix are Micah Rhodes, Austin Attalah, Jamarios Canton, Deshawn Simmons, Jai'Storm Knight, Dillon Mitchell, and Peyton Smith. That's a solid list of players that the Longhorns have shown interest in, and the feeling has been reciprocated by those recruits as well. Getting a foot in the door and an early chance to be the leader in their recruitment could be a massive victory for the coaching staff."

OnSI reporting that the interest between both the team and that group of recruits is mutual makes it sound as though Smith is trending in the right direction to receive that anxiously awaited offer.

Additionally, Smith reposted Spiegelman's tweet about the Longhorns looking to bring in yet another top recruiting class, which included the Texas insider discussing the Horns looking at Smith as a recruiting target.

Ultimately, it looks a whole lot like Smith, who grew up just three hours away from Austin, really wants to wear burnt orange in college. All that the Horns need to do is actually send him that offer.
