4 takeaways from Texas's messy win over Vanderbilt
Quinn Ewers bounces back with a big day through the air
Ewers got off to another rough start in this game, turning the ball over in the first quarter with an interception for the third game in a row in the SEC. On one of his first pass attempts of the game, Ewers had an unfortunate tipped pass that was intercepted by Vanderbilt's defense.
But this early-first quarter interception didn't keep Ewers from putting up big numbers for the rest of the first half. Ewers lifted the Texas offense to build a solid lead against the Commodores heading into the locker room at halftime.
After that first interception, Ewers completed well over 90 percent of his pass attempts for over 200 passing yards, and three passing touchdowns in the first half.
There were more ups and downs for Ewers in the second half against Vandy. Ewers threw another tipped-ball interception in the second half, which the Commodores converted into points late in the third quarter to pull the game within one score for Vandy.
The second interception is a pass Ewers should be getting more air under to get the screen ball comfortable into the hands of his receiver target.
Ewers did have a couple of nice passes in the second half to keep the chains moving. But Texas's offense stalled out on three key drives late in the third quarter and early in the fourth to allow Vanderbilt to stick around in the second half.
He did deliver when the Longhorns needed it at different points of this game. If not for those two tipped ball interceptions, Ewers played a really solid game against Vanderbilt in the win to keep the Longhorns College Football Playoff and SEC Championship Game hopes alive and well.
