No.10 Texas handled Sam Houston State as expected, but playing a weaker opponent is never a flex — it’s a controlled environment to focus on growth. For Arch Manning, this game served as a development checkpoint more than a statement performance.

Footwork & Mechanics (C)

Manning showed cleaner drops and better balance in the pocket. His shoulders remained square on quick throws, though there’s still room for improvement. He was much more comfortable dropping back.

He's still rushing himself, instead of reading his progression while dropping back.

Decision-Making (B-)

He avoided some risky throws and did what was asked of him by the staff; however, there were moments when he held onto the ball too long — an issue that will be magnified against conference opponents.

Accuracy & Ball Placement (C)

Touch and placement were inconsistent, highlighting an area that needs refinement before facing SEC secondaries. The receivers shouldn't have to reach for the ball or squat to try to catch it.

Some passes are delivered low, while others are out of reach. Not all of his throws are bad, though, so he's slowly progressing.

Composure & Leadership (B)

Manning commanded the huddle and the offense with confidence. His teammates fed off his high energy.

Key Takeaways & Next Steps

Progressions under pressure: Needs to maintain poise and make quicker reads when the pocket collapses. He's still rushing himself through the progressions.

Mechanical consistency: Refining his lower body movement, specifically flipping his hips, will help with delivering a ball that a receiver can do something with. Rhythm is essential, so smoother footwork would also benefit him.

Pocket awareness & mobility: Needs to react much quicker against faster defenders.

Leadership development: Continue maintaining himself and his mental health. His teammates love him and will go to battle with him.

Overall Grade

B-

This week offered a chance to clean up some fundamentals. Manning showed some progress in confidence, poise, and leadership, but his actual test comes against his conference opponents. The focus going forward: tighten up mechanics, accelerate decision-making under pressure, and translate pocket awareness into consistent execution.
