It's no secret that Texas is searching for high-level transfer portal guards to bring in and help lead the team to the promised land in 2026, and one of the most versatile players at point guard just became available.
BYU's Robert Wright III just shocked the college basketball world by throwing his name in the transfer portal, and there's absolutely no doubt that Sean Miller will be reaching out to him soon, if he hasn't already by now.
The 6'1", 185-pound guard averaged 18.1 PPG, 4.6 AST, 3.5 RPG, 1.2 SPG, and made 46.1% of his shots in 2025/2026. He was also a huge reason for the Cougars' success alongside A.J. Dybantsa, and the duo was one of the top overall guard combos in all of college basketball last year.

Wright III's ability to be effective in multiple areas of the floor on both offense and defense is what makes him such a valuable player.
In Texas' game against BYU in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament, Wright and Dybantsa combined for 49 points, and Wright had two big steals on defense that helped put the Longhorns in a couple of sticky situations.
Wright III isn't the type of player who can single-handedly take a game over with his scoring ability, but he's incredibly deadly when paired up with another slasher or cutter on offense. He also thrives in high pressure environments, so he'd be a perfect fit for Texas and the SEC.
He's very cerebral and decisive, consistently finding open lanes and attacking the basket as well. He would bring a different aspect to Texas' offense, as both Tramon Mark and Jordan Pope were more patient players and would rely on mid-range jumpers rather than aggressively grinding through the frontcourt like Wright III did on a regular basis for BYU over the past two seasons.
If Sean Miller can lure one of Robert Wright III, Wisconsin's John Blackwell, or Colorado's Isaiah Johnson to Austin, the outlook for Texas basketball in 2026 would be through the roof.
