Over the last two years, the Texas Longhorns have held their "biggest" rivals, the Oklahoma Sooners, to a combined nine points in two games.

With a 34-3 win in 2024 and a 23-6 win in 2025, the Horns have undeniably dominated the Red River Rivalry. It used to be heralded as one of the most competitive rivalries in the country, regardless of sport or competition level.

Because of the Longhorns' dominance against Oklahoma, junior edge rusher Colin Simmons admitted that while it's a rivalry on the books, it hasn't felt much like a rivalry during his time at Texas.

"It's hard when you beat OU two years in a row," Simmons said when asked if Red River was the best rivalry in college football. "The atmosphere says Rivalry, but when you're on the field, playing against [Oklahoma], it doesn't say rivalry."

Longhorns are more worried about the Aggies than the Sooners

Simmons went on to say that he would even consider the Lone Star Showdown, Texas's rivalry with the Texas A&M Aggies, a bigger rivalry than the Red River matchup.

"I'd say Texas A&M is more of a rivalry than OU," Simmons said. "Our first time playing Texas A&M [was] joining the SEC... The OU game been going on for so long, it's like, when you come back to a rivalry, it feels like 'OH.'"

Texas vs. Oklahoma since 2024

Over the last two years, since Simmons has been on Texas's roster, the Horns have outscored the Sooners 57-9, absolutely obliterating Oklahoma and laying claim to the Red River "Rivalry."

  • 2024: 34-3 Texas win
  • 2025: 23-6 Texas win

On the other hand, while Texas has walked away with two straight wins over the Aggies, the games have been significantly closer and much more hate-filled.

  • 2024: 17-7 Texas win
  • 2025: 27-17 Texas win

Since joining the SEC, the Longhorns have gone undefeated against their in-state rivals, but have only outscored Texas A&M by a combined 44-14, leaving a 30-point deficit for the Aggies compared to a 48-point deficit for the Sooners.

However, in a counterpoint to Simmons' argument about the quality of the two rivalries, the series record between Texas and Oklahoma is significantly closer than that of the Longhorns and Aggies.

Over their 126-year, 121-game rivalry, Texas has defeated Oklahoma 65 times, suffering just 51 losses and tying the Sooners on five occasions. Meanwhile, over their 132-year, 120-game rivalry, the Horns have defeated the Aggies 78 times, suffering a minimal 37 losses, but also tying Texas A&M five times.

The Red River Rivalry and the Lone Star Showdown are legendary rivalries in the world of college football and college sports in general.

However, according to Simmons, the Sooners have turned into somewhat of an afterthought for the Longhorns, while they still feel the heat when they face the Aggies.

This year, Simmons' junior season, Texas and Oklahoma are scheduled to play on Saturday, Oct. 10, in the Cotton Bowl Stadium. The Longhorns and the Aggies are scheduled to play on Friday, Nov. 27, in College Station.
