Everything Steve Sarkisian said after Texas's win over Texas A&M
By Shane Black
The Lone Star Showdown was renewed on Saturday night, as No. 3 ranked Texas football left Kyle Field with a 17-7 win over the 20th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies.
The Longhorns physically dominated this game from the get-go, pushing the Aggies back on both sides of the ball. Texas outgained Texas A&M 254-141 in the first half, taking a 17-0 lead into the locker room.
Texas came out and enforced their will on the ground in the second half, but two untimely turnovers inside the A&M ten-yard line, including a pick-six, kept the Aggies in the game.
However, as they did all game, the Texas defense bowed up late in the fourth quarter, stuffing the Aggie offense on three consecutive plays inside the Longhorn three-yard line.
On paper, Texas football dominated this game. But turnovers and special teams miscuses kept their in-state rival in this one until the very end.
What Texas football HC Steve Sarkisian said after winning the Lone Star Showdown over Texas A&M
Here is everything head coach Steve Sarkisian said about the 17-7 win in College Station.
On the win:
“We won the game in a physical manner, which is what we know we needed to do in the Southeastern Conference.”
“I don’t think the environment caused us any issues. And I’m not trying to demean anything. I was probably anticipating more. I mean, I built it up in my own head to make sure we could handle whatever it was.”
Steve Sarkisian says aside from the Ewers’ turnovers and the blocked punt: “I really thought we controlled the game and dominated the game.”
On the defense:
“Defensively tonight, it was just an absolutely dominant performance.”
On Vernon Broughton and Alfred Collins: Those guys are really versatile players because of their length and athleticism. Both of those guys have really worked at their craft to be very good run defenders for us which is something we challenged them to do this offseason."
On the offense:
“I was proud of the guys. To line up and run the football the way that we did, I thought was awesome. It was fun to watch. I get labeled as this passing guy all the time, but you guys have been covering us for four years now. We run the ball great in critical moments, late in games especially.”
“I was really proud of Trevor Goosby… stepped into his first real action and played well.”
On Quinn Ewers:
Coach Sarkisian said that Quinn played a “good football game tonight” with timely scrambles and deep passes. He said he challenged Ewers on Thursday to gut through practice and then earned the right to play.
Called the turnovers “a couple of bad luck plays.”
Going forward:
“I’d probably be surprised if we didn’t get in [to the College Football Playoff]. But really, I want to go try to win an SEC championship. And if we can do that, then you get a bye."
