Everything Texas players said after rivalry win over Texas A&M
By Shane Black
The Lone Star Showdown was renewed on Saturday night, as No. 3 ranked Texas football left Kyle Field with a 17-7 win over the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies for the first time since the 2011 season.
The Longhorns physically dominated this game from the get-go, pushing the Aggies back on both sides of the ball. Texas outgained Texas A&M 254-141 in the first half, taking a 17-0 lead into the locker room.
Texas came out and enforced their will on the ground in the second half, but two untimely turnovers inside the A&M ten-yard line, including a pick-six, kept the Aggies in the game.
However, as they did all game, the Texas defense bowed up late in the fourth quarter, stuffing the Aggie offense on three consecutive plays inside the Longhorn three-yard line.
On paper, Texas football dominated this game. But turnovers and special teams miscuses kept their in-state rival in this one until the very end.
Texas football players speak after sending the Longhorns to the SEC Championship Game vs. Georgia with a rivalry win over Texas A&M
Here is everything Texas players said after clinching their spot in the SEC Championship.
Quinn Ewers, QB
"Been in situations where adversity has struck many times. I guess it's kind of like a blessing in disguise because with it happening before, we know how to react to it and I know how to react to it."
"It's definitely tough dealing with certain injuries. These guys can say the same thing. You just want to be out there with your guys and you feel guilty when you're not just because of the hard work you put in."
On the defense: “It’s just like a common theme at this point, they continue to save our butts on offense.”
Tre Wisner, RB
"No matter what type of game it is, whenever my name is called, my job is to step up and do my job."
“Every game is an SEC championship game. So every week, we’re not just coming out there fiddle-dazzling around, you know? We’re coming out there to get better and compete at a high level."
"It definitely felt like when it came down to it, I would have to do what needed to be done for the team to come out with a victory."
"As the game goes on, the more I get comfortable running the ball, seeing my reads, and get to my landmarks. The more I'm able to be explosive in my cuts and my runs."
Matthew Golden, WR
On Tre Wisner: "He was waiting for his time to come and he executed."
Michael Taaffe, DB
“How good does this feel? It felt really good to hear silence at the end.”
"Guys like Sam Ehlinger, guys who were all about the University of Texas, who would thrive in these type of environments, these type of rivarly games ... I just thought about guys like that because who knows what they would have done to get this opportunity. We gotta praise them for paving the way."
Jahdae Barron, DB
"Yeah, we had it in the back of our heads that we wanted to be in Atlanta. But in order to do that, we had to handle business."
"When Sark first came we talked about culture. He just harps on culture and we continue to build the culture, not on the field but off the field."
“Michael Taaffe is the best in the world.”
Vernon Broughton, DT
On the 4th and goal mindset: "Don't let them get in the end zone."
"We're just getting started. We've got to keep working. A win is a win, but we've got to keep working."
Alfred Collins, DT
"We just don't like people in our paint."
On the defense: "Best in the nation."
Anthony Hill, LB
On the fourth down stop: "We were excited because we feel like nobody's getting in the end zone with us. If you think you're going to just run right at us for one yard, I feel like you've lost your mind. I mean, that's not going to happen."
Gunnar Helm, TE
"We have a lot of faith in our defense."
