It was just announced that Texas RB C.J. Baxter is officially planning on entering the transfer portal when it opens, per Pete Thamel.

Though it's a pretty big bummer to lose a tailback as talented as Baxter, the Longhorns are absolutely chock full of blue-chip players at the running back position. This is probably one of the biggest factors in his decision to leave as well.

C.J. Baxter's career with the Longhorns has been incredibly inconsistent to say the least, with his 2024 ACL injury playing a huge role in his downfall with the Longhorns. It ultimately gave Quintrevion Wisner a window to take over as the main ball-carrier, and it's stayed that way even after Baxter returned in 2025.

Baxter would have an even harder time finding the field next season with Tre Wisner, Christian Clark, and James Simon already in the fold, and blue-chip RB recruit Derrek Cooper coming in for 2026. Sometimes players just have to make a decision that's best for them, and this is a perfect example of it.

Though the Longhorns will be okay from an on-field standpoint, Baxter will be missed by many within the fanbase.

He was the BIG 12's offensive newcomer of the year as a true freshman in 2023, rushing for over 650 yards and averaged 4.8 yards per carry. Baxter has an excellent head on his shoulders and is incredibly supportive of his teammates. There's no doubt that he's going to have a successful career wherever he decides to transfer to for the 2026 season.
