Texas Longhorn football is in the middle of looking for future talent that can take the football to new heights in the future. That means going out and looking for more quarterbacks and other positions that Texas needs to strengthen to compete in the SEC.
It's a football powerhouse conference, and if you don't recruit, you'll find yourself not competing for the conference championship. The Longhorns had a very special recruit visit Austin this weekend, whose last name is that of an NFL quarterback you might remember.
Gunner Rivers, son of former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers, visited the campus on Sunday over the weekend. He's a four-star quarterback who's playing at St. Michael Catholic in Fairhope, Alabama. Two other SEC Schools are also recruiting him to commit to their football programs.
He's entering his Junior year in high school with some outstanding stats that would turn heads for college coaches. Over 7,000 yards in two high school seasons is not an easy task to pull off.
He reminds me of his dad when I look at some of his highlight videos. By the time he commits to a college, Arch Manning will probably be getting ready to move on to the NFL. The Longhorns will be looking for a quarterback who can take over the reins from Manning and continue to make the College Football Playoffs. The only thing that some Longhorns fans might be concerned about is the talent that he's competing against in high school.
Even though he's playing against bad competition, he's shown he can play for an elite football program in college, and Texas should be focusing its efforts on recruiting the quarterback to commit to the Longhorns.
Just imagine the Longhorns getting back-to-back high school QBs that have ties to the NFL through family members? That's something that could help recruit talent in other areas, such as on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. The Longhorns need to consider that when recruiting him.
It will be interesting to see how Rivers adapts to college football when it's time to pick a program. It will be a step-up in competition for sure, but he looks ready for the challenge, and Sarkisian needs a QB looking to prove himself at the next level.
If he decides to attend another college other than Texas, I will respect his decision. He's going to be a game-changer at the college level, and Sarkisian needs to go all in and recruit him to Austin.
