Ryan Watts is just 23 years old. He entered the NFL less than a year ago after being picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Now, signs are pointing toward Watts' retirement from football.
Watts spent all of last season with the Steelers but never played a snap during the regular season after suffering a life-threatening neck injury during the preseason.
Now, Pittsburgh released the former Longhorn defensive back after coming to the conclusion that medically retiring from football would be his best, and safest, course of action.
"Unfortunately, today we are releasing Ryan Watts from our roster," said Omar Khan, the general manager of the Steelers. "After consulting with our medical team, medical experts, and Ryan's representatives, we all agree that it is in Ryan's best interest to discontinue playing football at this time. We will continue to assist and support Ryan as he transitions to the next phase of his life."

What happened to Ryan Watts?
Watts sustained his neck injury during the Steelers' last preseason game against the Detroit Lions. The injury ended his rookie season before it ever truly began. In January, just a few months ago, Watts shared an update about his recovery on social media. He posted a photo from his hospital bed with a neck brace on, and he vowed to "remain optimistic."
Because of the injury, Watts was never able to play in a regular-season game after entering the NFL and recorded zero stats during his time with the Steelers.

The young defensive back transferred to Texas after starting his collegiate career with the Ohio State Buckeyes. While playing for the Longhorns, Watts recorded 91 total tackles (65 solo), six pass deflections, one sack, and one interception.
