Former Texas football quarterback Maalik Murphy has decided to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Murphy will be entering the portal during the winter transfer window after spending one season as the starting quarterback for the Duke Blue Devils.

Maalik Murphy, ex-Texas football QB, in the transfer portal for the second time for the 2025 offseason

ESPN's Pete Thamel was the first to report the news on Dec. 9 that Murphy plans to enter the transfer portal.

Murphy spent the first two seasons of his career in college with head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns before transferring to Duke last offseason. He started all 12 games he played for the Blue Devils during the 2024 regular season, leading Duke to an impressive 9-3 record.

He led the Blue Devils to their first nine-win regular season in a decade (since 2014).

In his first year as a full-time starting quarterback for P4 team at Duke, Murphy put up big numbers with passing yards and touchdowns. He ranked in the top half of the ACC in passing yards (2,933), passing yards per game (245), and passing touchdowns (26).

During his final season at Texas in 2023, Murphy was the backup to starting quarterback Quinn Ewers for the Longhorns. Murphy led Texas to a 2-0 record in two games as the starting quarterback in the Big 12 in the 2023 season. He helped Texas get two critical Big 12 wins in conference play over a top-25 Kansas State team in overtime and a dominant victory over BYU, which helped the Longhorns make the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history.

Murphy was one of the top quarterback recruits from the West Coast, and he signed with head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns in the 2022 class. From Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA, Murphy was part of Texas's top-five-ranked 2022 recruiting class in the nation in the 247Sports Composite.

He ranks as the No. 6 transfer quarterback in the 247Sports Composite.

With Murphy surfacing in the portal for the second time in as many offseason during the winter transfer window, I'd assume there are plenty of schools out there wanting his services as a talented starting quarterback in the P4.
