Texas football loses safeties coach Blake Gideon to the ACC this offseason

Georgia Tech is replacing former defensive coordinator Tyler Santucci, who left the Yellow Jackets' coaching staff earlier this offseason to be the linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens in the NFL.

Gideon spent four years as Texas's safeties coach, and he also played for the Longhorns as a multi-year starter and two-time captain from 2008-2011.

During his four years as Texas's safeties coach, Gideon helped coach up key starters at the position, like Michael Taaffe, Andrew Mukuba, Derek Williams Jr., and Anthony Cook.

He helped coach up a secondary this past season that was one of the best in the nation. Texas ranked seventh in the nation in passing defense (173.8 passing yards allowed per game) and tied for first in passing touchdowns allowed per game (0.6).

Texas had multiple All-SEC and All-American safeties who were staples in the secondary for a team that made it all the way to the College Football Playoff semifinals last postseason, including Taaffe and Mukuba.

Gideon also did a great job recruiting blue-chip talent at defensive back for the Longhorns in the past few cycles. He helped the Longhorns sign one of the top defensive back recruiting classes in the nation for the 2025 cycle, including five-stars Kade Phillips and Jonah Williams.

Before taking the job as Texas's safeties coach during the 2021 offseason, Gideon was the special teams coordinator for the Ole Miss Rebels for the 2020 season.

Gideon has also served in various roles as a defensive and/or special teams assistant on staff with the Houston Cougars, Georgia State Panthers, and Florida Gators in the past decade (since 2014).

Georgia Tech finished the 2024 season with a 7-6 (5-3 ACC) record. Head coach Brent Key has led the Yellow Jackets to two straight bowl eligible seasons in 2023 and 2024.
