Hunter Yurachek gives ridiculous reason why Texas is not in the CFP hunt

CFP Selection Committee Chair Hunter Yurachek gave a pretty bad excuse for keeping Texas out of the playoffs.

The College Football Playoffs Selection Committee released their penultimate CFP rankings last night, and though the Longhorns moved up to No.13, it still doesn't feel right.

When addressing the enormous burnt orange "elephant in the room" last night, Yurachek said:

"I can't predict what one's path would be to get to the CFP either. It would have to be one of the five highest ranked conference champions. Texas does not play for the Southeastern Conference Championship this weekend; that's not their path. Then you'd have to be one of the seven highest ranked at-large teams. That would be Texas's path as we re-rank this one last time this weekend."

Yurachek also said that the Florida loss is what's holding Texas back right now.

"The only loss to an unranked team was Texas's loss to Florida at Florida, and really Florida dominated that game, held Texas to 50 yards rushing, two interceptions. So it's not that Texas played Ohio State; it is Texas' loss to Florida that's holding them back now."

If that's actually the case, then why is Alabama ranked so high when they lost to a just-as-bad Florida State team in 2025? It's absolutely mind-numbing.

The most frustrating thing about this entire situation is that Texas should be one of the seven highest-ranked at-large teams right now simply based on their overall schedule. As mentioned in a previous article, the Longhorns should be in the top 12 right now with contingencies built in.

For example, if Alabama loses to Georgia this weekend or if BYU loses to Texas Tech, then Texas would be a lock.

It seems like, on paper at least, that the Longhorns should be sitting at No.12 ahead of Miami.

It's great that the committee finally put Texas ahead of Vanderbilt and Utah this week, so at least they're trending in the right direction. It's going to be incredibly interesting to see where the Longhorns are ranked after the conference championship games take place this upcoming weekend.
