"Immaturity up front", Steve Sarkisian bluntly calls out Texas' OL after week 2

Texas HC Steve Sarkisian had a few things to say about his offensive line's performance following their matchup against San Jose State.

Though on the surface, it seemed like the Longhorns' offensive line played fairly well for most of the game despite a few plays, it's evident that the coaching staff had different thoughts.

"I didn't think we carried enough information into the game and applied it up front. To me, I think that showed a little bit of our immaturity upfront on Saturday, that it wasn't the same game. It was a different game. You can't play it the same. You know that's something where I think we need to grow this week and learn and understand who's my opponent, what are they trying to do to me, how are they trying to beat me, and then how am I going to combat that within the ball game."

Personally, I feel like Texas Co-OC and OL Coach Kyle Flood got caught in the crossfire in the first sentence, but it's easy to interpret what Sark's trying to say here. Texas' OL came out kind of "flat" and it looked like they weren't prepared for the different personnel matchups. For example, San Jose State DT Gafa Faga is one of the top defensive linemen in the MWC and he gave the interior offensive line fits throughout the first half in situations where he shouldn't have been able to. It almost looked like Cole Hutson, D.J. Campbell, and Connor Stroh didn't know who he was because he made a few nice plays against Texas' offense in short-yardage situations.

If an offensive lineman was more prepared, they would've communicated pre-snap about making sure to double team him or at least point out that he's the main down-lineman that they need to focus on in those types of spots.

Offensive line is just like every other position on the field where watching film and studying your opponents' tendencies is extremely important, and Steve Sarkisian is basically just giving the O-Line a "kick in the pants" here. As we get into the SEC portion of the schedule in a couple weeks, these types of preparedness problems can't be happening in the trenches.
