In a stunning plot twist, Texas could re-enter race for 2027 5-star defender

Blue-chip DT Jalen Brewster made it publicly known that his relationship with Texas Tech is currently on the rocks, and now might be the perfect time for the Longhorns to strike.

Over the past few days, Jalen Brewster, who is one of Texas Tech's top commits in the 2027 class, has become less and less "locked in" with the Red Raiders. The main reason being that the coach with whom Brewster developed a relationship at Texas Tech, Zarnell Fitch, recently left the program.

When a member of the media addressed the situation and asked Brewster if he's still as committed to the Red Raiders as he was before the staff move, Brewster said:

"No."

Though he was incredibly short with the media, it speaks volumes as he was originally very vocal about the university and his commitment.

The 6'3", 305-pound defensive tackle from Cedar Hill, TX, is currently the No.1-ranked defensive lineman in the 2027 class and the No.3-ranked player from the state of Texas.

Brewster is incredibly powerful and plays with excellent body control at the point of contact. He has tons of upper-body strength that he uses to consistently stack and shed blockers against the run. Very few prep-level offensive linemen can successfully handle him 1-on-1, and there's a very good chance that he'll develop into more than just a 1-technique at the next level based on his overall motor.

Though he was more of a strength-only player early on, he's starting to develop some consistent "wiggle" as a high school upperclassman. He's been lining up at 3-technique and even some 4i as a junior and has been successful attacking the outside shoulder of offensive linemen.

This has actually been what's causing him to skyrocket up recruiting boards as of late. He's always been dominant against the run, but he was missing the pass-rush element.

Brewster's been in contact with Texas DL Coach Kenny Baker since last January, and don't be surprised if the Longhorns end up being a real player when his recruitment is all said and done. This, of course, all hinges on whether or not Brewster actually decommits or flips from Texas Tech.
