"Abomination", Texas fans are dumbfounded by Josh Pate's 2025 ranking of rival QB

Pate recently released his list of top quarterbacks entering the 2025 season, and he has Oklahoma QB John Mateer sitting in a crazy spot.

CFB Analyst Josh Pate released his list of top quarterbacks entering the 2025 season yesterday, and where he has new Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer ranked is an absolute abomination to the college football world.

Yes, Mateer was incredibly good at Washington State last season but he hasn't done anything whatsoever to be ranked above guys like Garrett Nussmeier, Cade Klubnik, and LaNorris Sellers. Pate currently has Mateer as his No.2 overall quarterback heading into 2025.

You could even say that Lagway is incredibly high in his rankings, but at least he's shown the ability and skillset at the Power Four level.

One of the only ways that Pate could salvage his rankings is if they're 80% based upon projections for the upcoming season, with only 20% based on their actual resume and past success as college football quarterbacks.

Mateer's athletic ability as a run threat usually draws in analysts because he was able to do some crazy things on the ground for Wazzu last season. He finished the 2024 season with 3,139 passing yards, 29 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions through the air with 826 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. Those numbers are pretty dang good, but again, he wasn't facing the type of competition that he'll be facing in the SEC.

Yes, he's definitely a good player but he hasn't shown the type of passing ability that somebody like Cam Ward showed when he transferred to Miami from Washinton State. It's surprising to see someone as knowledgable and established as Josh Pate having somebody like Mateer so incredibly high this early in his Power Four career.

As a college football fan, I'd love for Mateer to succeed and light up the world with excitement. As a Texas football fan, his ranking should make you want to gag in comparison to all the other quarterbacks who deserve the right to be ranked much higher than they are.
