Texas women’s basketball hosted No.11 North Carolina at the Moody Center yesterday for the annual ACC/SEC Women's Challenge. The Tar Heels gave the Longhorns a run for their money in the first half of the game. However, by halftime, the Longhorns were making their shots, and it was lights out for the Tar Heels.
The Longhorns won by a final score of 79-64, and with that win, Texas helped the SEC with the trophy that’s given to the conference with the most wins.

We have to give the North Carolina Tar Heels credit for being prepared and giving Texas a nice wake-up call for the SEC conference slate of games that they'll play. The only reason the Longhorns were able to beat the Tar Heels is because Jordan Lee ended up scoring a career-high 22 points. The Tar Heels did a good job of taking Madison Booker and Rori Harmon out for most of the game.
Here are four takeaways from last night's win over the Tar Heels:

1. North Carolina came to play on Thursday
North Carolina showed up to play last night and it provided a very welcomed lesson for the Longhorns. Just because Texas is the No.2-ranked team in the country doesn’t mean they'll have an easy route to the SEC Championship. The Longhorns will play elite teams like LSU and South Carolina during their conference schedule this season.
Taking on the Tar Heels yesterday was like a non-conference exhibition to prepare for some of the good women’s basketball teams in the SEC.
2. Winning the turnover battle
The Longhorns did a good job of winning the turnover battle against the Tar Heels. Texas forced a total of 20 turnovers, and when you take on the No.11 team in the country, you have to win the turnover battle to beat them. It felt like the Longhorns did a good job of limiting the amount of possessions the Tar Heels had as well, and that’s something Texas needs to do if they want to be playing in the SEC Championship this season.
3. Texas continues to win with an eight-person bench
That's the one thing that has impressed me in their recent games: Texas continues to win with an incredibly limited bench. The Longhorns are still dealing with some injuries, and those players should be back soon. However, they're playing smart and avoiding foul trouble. You don't see many short benches take down three ranked teams.
4. Surprising game from Rori Harmon
I’m a little surprised with how Harmon played against UNC. Usually, she is one of the top scorers for the Longhorns on any given night. Sometimes players just have nights where their shot is off.
However, the Longhorns' depth showed up and helped take down the Tar Heels. Texaswill be back in action on Sunday as they take on Prairie View A&M at 2 PM. Stay tuned for another exciting women’s basketball game at the Moody Center.
