Less than a week ago, the Texas Longhorns missed out on Sophia Schlader, the No. 1 pitcher and No. 3 overall prospect in the class of 2028, to the Oklahoma Sooners. This week, head coach Mike White and his staff are celebrating a commitment from one of the other top recruits in the cycle.
Lauren Schellhammer, the No. 4 overall prospect and No. 2 pitcher in the recruiting class of 2028, just committed to Texas, and she brings the exact kind of firepower that the Horns are looking for.
This year will still belong to Texas's current star pitcher Teagan Kavan, and she will be supported by freshman Madi Doty, a former five-star prospect. Then, once Kavan graduates and the 2028 season peaks over the horizon, Doty will only be a sophomore and will only really have true freshman Brooklynn Hagerty, a four-star pitching prospect, as her second-hand.
However, when the 2029 season finally creeps around the corner, Schellhammer's addition to the bullpen will have the Horns boasting one of the best pitching staffs in the country once again.
Longhorns get much-needed future pitching depth with Lauren Schellhammer's commitment
No matter who steps into the circle after Kavan's reign on the 40 Acres reaches its end, the Horns are quite simply going to have to desperately hope they can even hold a candle to what Kavan has accomplished at Texas.
The current starter for the Longhorns' defense was named the back-to-back Women's College World Series MVP, something that had never been accomplished before in the sport (by anyone, regardless of position).
She undeniably led Texas to its two consecutive National Championships, and she has been the heart and soul of this team.
Players like Doty, Hagerty, and now Schellhammer are going to have a lot of eyes on them to see if they can live up to their hype, much less to the standard Kavan has carried throughout her four years with the program.
While Doty is already expected to start stepping up to the plate (metaphorically speaking, of course) this season, it will still be a few years until Schellhammer starts suiting up in burnt orange and white.
Schellhammer is best known for her fastball, a change from Kavan, who is best known for her rise ball. However, the class of 2028 star has already proven that her pitching can succeed at the national level, representing USA Softball as a two-time All-American and winning three softball National Championships throughout her high school career so far.
Simply put, Schellhammer was the exact kind of player White needed to land from the class of 2028, and he did just that.

Schellhammer was the second blue-chip recruit to commit to Texas from the class of 2028, joining the No. 1 overall prospect from the cycle, Michaela Landers, the most highly-touted infielder that the Horns have landed in a long time.
With only two commitments in the class so far, Texas has yet to emerge in the national recruiting rankings, but one more recruit choosing Texas could have the Longhorns flying to the top of the list in the blink of an eye.
