It's no secret that Steve Sarkisian and Texas had an excellent recruiting class in 2026 despite not finishing No.1 as they did in the previous cycle. Though they were able to lock up the likes of blue-chip RB Derrek Cooper, WR Jermaine Bishop, and LB Tyler Atkinson this year, one of the most impactful newbies so far has been a 3-star safety from Colorado.
Toray Davis, a 6'1", 198-pound DB from Fairview HS in Boulder, CO, has been stepping up big so far throughout spring practice for Will Muschamp's defense. He's been rotating at both safety spots and has shown off his versatility and processing skills early on in Austin.
Toray Davis is proof that recruiting stars don't mean everything
He's been making plays left and right for the Longhorns in place of Xavier Filsaime, who's still rehabbing from his injury.
Jelani McDonald, Texas' leader in the secondary, also mentioned Davis in a recent spring media session as someone who's been impressive so far on defense.

Yes, a good amount of his success can be attributed to an "injured room", but the fact that a non-blue-chip recruit is stepping up and being as consistent as Davis has been isn't common. We've been hearing Davis' name come up in conversation for the last month or so, and it's obvious that the kid can play at a high level despite being relatively underrecruited.
Davis is an exceptional athlete as well, and it's one of the reasons why Texas tried so hard to get him to flip from UCLA in December, which is where he was committed since June of 2025.
Despite continually bringing in a plethora of defensive backs every year, Toray Davis is definitely a name to watch for Longhorns fans over the next couple of seasons.
