While plenty of Texas football fans must still be riding high following the Red River Rivalry win over the Oklahoma Sooners, it's not all good news for head man Steve Sarkisian. On Tuesday, it has been reported that a former elite running back signee is leaving the program.

According to reporters Justin Wells and Eric Nahlin, speedster Jerrick Gibson is no longer with the team. Gibson originally signed as a member of the 2024 class, picking the Longhorns over 22 other offers. However, he was buried on the depth chart a bit and he's now going to be looking for more playing time with a different school:

Texas football RB Jerrick Gibson is no longer with the program

Thus far this season, Gibson has rushed for 152 yards on 37 carries with one touchdown. During his true freshman campaign, he made a bit of a splash for Sark and Co., posting 377 yards and four scores - he also averaged 4.8 yards per carry.

However, he wasn't a featured option for the offense this year and his frustration was clearly building each week. This past weekend in the head-turning win against the Sooners, Gibson only had one carry and it was for -3 yards.

Gibson had looked strong earlier in the season, carrying the ball 11 times for 53 yards and a TD against Sam Houston State, while also recording 18 carries for 64 yards against UTEP. With him only appearing in four games in 2025, it gives him a redshirt year if he chooses to use one in the future.

Coming out of high school, Gibson was ranked four stars and the No. 3 running back in the country according to 247Sports. Texas fans everywhere were excited about his future in Austin, but he's now played his last snap for UT. This is something no one expected and it's certainly a bummer for Texas as a whole that things didn't work out for him on campus.
