2 freshman Texas CBs who were praised in practice this week

Texas football's depth in the defensive backfield is as strong as it's ever been during head coach Steve Sarkisian's four years in Austin.

Kobe Black

The highest-rated cornerback recruit for the Longhorns in the 2024 signing class, true freshman Kobe Black, has looked as advertised and more so far this spring camp. Black's presence in the cornerback room has added a competitive edge among the young players vying for early reps at the position this spring.

"There’s an influx of some young players that are getting some good opportunities and seeing some growth in them and what they can be. Wardell Mack and Kobe Black are those guys. "

We always knew Black had the ability to be an early impact corner at Texas during his recruitment this past cycle. But he's really started to come on strong of late for the Longhorns in camp, especially in the first scrimmage of spring ball last weekend.

During simulated live-game action in team drills last week, Black picked off one of the Texas cornerbacks when he got the jump on a route by the receiver. He also held his own in the 11-on-11 portion of the spring scrimmage on April 6.

A Horns247 report on April 11 (paid content) specifically mentioned Black among the true freshman early enrollees who have stood out in the last couple of weeks in spring practice.

It sounds like Black's game is trending up at the perfect time for him to have a good showing in the Orange-White Game on April 20 and potentially gain some ground on the corner depth chart entering preseason camp.
