Jeff Goodman was first to report on April 15 that junior guard Tyrese Hunter is entering the transfer portal. Hunter has one year of eligibility remaining.

Hunter spent the last two seasons as a starter in Texas's backcourt unit. He started over 70 games in those two seasons and averaged over 10 points per game, three assists, three rebounds, and one steal.

Before the last two years at Texas, Hunter played one season for the Iowa State Cyclones.

He was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year for the Cyclones for the 2021-22 season. When he entered the portal during the 2022 offseason, Hunter was one of the most highly sought after transfer guards in the Big 12.

But Hunter could never quite match that success he found during his true freshman campaign consistently at Texas in the last two years. Hunter had a tumultuous journey in his two years on the 40.

Despite the ups and downs, Hunter still was part of a starting backcourt that saw a good amount of postseason success for the Longhorns, winning four NCAA Tournament games since 2023.

Hunter's departure comes after Texas landed multiple portal guard commitments over the weekend to fill depth in the backcourt.
