With summer workouts beginning for Texas basketball and head coach Rodney Terry this week, the staff has turned its focus to preparing for their inaugural season in the SEC for 2024-25. Texas has welcomed over a half-dozen new additions to the program this summer in the 2024 class via high school signees and portal pickups.

Three of the Longhorns' eight new enrollees this summer are high school recruits who signed in the 2024 class, highlighted by five-star shooting guard Tre Johnson.

Last-minute portal bigs Texas basketball could target early this summer

The rotation was mostly reloaded with four immediate impact transfers who have multiple years of starting experience at other major/mid-major conference schools. Guards/wings Jordan Pope, Julian Larry, and Tramon Mark will all bolster the backcourt and wing rotations that were lacking depth at times in conference play last season.

Texas also brought in former Indiana State redshirt junior forward Jayson Kent to be a potential impact starter in the frontcourt next season. The most recent portal pickup, former Vanderbilt sophomore wing Malik Presley will add depth on the wing for Terry and the Longhorns.

Texas's five portal pickups and three incoming freshmen from high school brings the projected rotation up to 12 scholarship players for 2024-25. That leaves the Longhorns with one scholarship spot remaining.

Terry could add one more piece to the rotation if he wanted to from the portal ahead of next season.

If the Longhorns do hit the portal to fill the final scholarship spot, it would be best served to use that spot on a two-way low-post player. Texas did add depth and long-term upside to the frontcourt earlier this week by signing former three-star Vanderbilt center commit Jamie Vinson.

Here's three portal options for the Longhorns to find a big man to fill the final scholarship spot in the rotation this offseason.
