2 SEC transfer pitchers who committed to Texas this week
New Texas baseball head coach Jim Schlossnagle is winding up this cycle in the NCAA Transfer Portal during the 2024 offseason with a handful of more commitments to upgrade the pitching staff. Schlossnagle and new Texas pitching coach Max Weiner have emphasized retooling the pitching staff with proven arms who can lift the bullpen and starting rotation entering the SEC in 2025.
Texas baseball coaching staff continues to add proven SEC arms from the transfer portal
Texas ranked in the bottom half of power conference teams last season in terms of team earned run average (4.88), hits (535), and walks allowed (258). Getting this team to the next level entering the SEC next year required a near-complete rebuild of the pitching staff in Austin this offseason.
Schlossnagle and Weiner have made good use of high school recruiting and the transfer portal this offseason to retool the pitching staff entering next season. Texas has flipped multiple top-tier pitcher recruits in the 2024 class this summer, including a few former pledges to the Texas A&M Aggies.
And after adding two more SEC arms from the portal this week, the Longhorns have added a half-dozen transfers to the pitching staff this offseason. Half of the pitcher transfers the Longhorns brought in this summer are from other SEC schools.
This provides the Longhorns rotation with valuable proven pitching experience from multiple top programs around the SEC, including the LSU Tigers, South Carolina Gamecocks, and Ole Miss Rebels.
Joining the new transfers on the projected roster this offseason are a dozen returning players from last year's squad under former head coach David Pierce and nine high school commitments to the 2024 class.
Here's a look at the two SEC pitching transfers who committed to the Longhorns from the portal in the last 24 hours.
